The ceremony also included the lighting of candles to commemorate the occasion.
Ousman Jammeh said that, thanks to his work with the ICTR, he was able to see first-hand the courage and resilience of genocide survivors in their difficult testimonies. He also drew attention to the crucial role played by the media in inciting hatred and division and called on Africans to learn from this tragedy.
The commemoration of the genocide against Tutsis in Rwanda is an opportunity to remember and honor the one million lives lost in three months in 1994. In Rwanda and around the world, the commemoration is a moment of reflection on the past and a moment to renew to the commitment of "never again".
Oley Dibba-Wadda, Director of Human Capital, Youth and Skills Development at the Bank, speaking on behalf of President Akinwumi A. Adesina, said the 1994 genocide was "a profound healing of the consciousness of humanity ". She expressed solidarity with the people During this period of commemoration, Rwanda praised the courage and sacrifice of badistants who risked their lives to save others.

In his remarks, Minister Kobenan Koubadi Adjoumani, representing Prime Minister Amadou Gon Coulibaly, said that the genocide against Tutsi in Rwanda reminded Africa and the world of the dramatic consequences of a policy based on terrorism. hatred, communitarianism and any other form of divisionism. He stressed the importance of educating young Africans to give them the tools they need to systematically reject the ideology of genocide and protect unity.
Addressing the participants, Pacific Kayihura, president of the Rwandan diaspora in Ivory Coast, pointed out that progress made in Rwanda over the last 25 years in the areas of unity, justice, reconciliation and development demonstrate that no country is doomed to failure. and that our strength lies in unity. He also urged participants not to remain indifferent to the impunity and suffering of others.
In conclusion, Ambbadador Stanislas Kamanzi thanked the Government of Côte d'Ivoire and the African Development Bank for the solidarity shown during this commemoration period. He reiterated that over the past 25 years, as we mourn the loss of our loved ones, "we do not let despair defeat us. Rwanda has instead launched a challenge of rebirth … for an inclusive, fair, dignified and prosperous society. "
