African swine fever takes the lead in South Africa

South Africa has confirmed an outbreak of African swine fever on a farm in the North West Province, the World Organization for Animal Health announced Wednesday.

The outbreak killed 32 people on a herd of 36 pigs on a farm in Ditsobotla district. All the remaining pigs on the farm were slaughtered.

The farm was located outside the disease control zone in South Africa and could be linked to contact with wildlife, according to a report from the South African Ministry of Agriculture.

The PPA virus, which is deadly and highly transmissible in pigs but harmless to humans, has spread rapidly in China, the country's largest pig herd. The OIE reported that almost all administrative units in China at the provincial level reported one or more PPA fractures.
