The Attorney General withdrew all charges against the nine members of the Homeland Study Group Foundation who were allegedly working for the secession of the Ghana Volta Region.

Winnifred Sarpong, a state bar lawyer, appeared before the court presided over by three judges and told the court that they had been instructed to remove the case against the nine judges.

The defendants were charged with treason, complicity in unlawful badembly, and offensive behavior conducive to breaking the peace.

The defendants are Mr. Bisa Akorli, 54, Mr. Kofi Dzereke, 39, Mr. Thompson Tsigbe, 58, Mr. Benjamin Agbadzada, 48, Agbenyega Akudzi, 54, Freemen Blikaku, 36, Mr. Nkpe Tsryiri Kudzo, 61, and Sergeant Samuel Kabla Kpogli.

They were arrested by a team of policemen and soldiers at Ho on Sunday, May 5, as they were meeting to organize the proclamation of an independent Togo as an independent state on May 9. 2009.

According to the police, the group would have created a constitution and a hymn for the so-called declaration of independence.

Police also claimed that group leaders were training youth in the "militia" to form the core of police and military activities in the supposedly new country, Western Togo, after the declaration of independence.
