A member of parliament from North Tongu said that there was an intolerance to press freedom under the government of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
"A certain model is emerging," said Okudzeto Ablakwa on Newsfile.
"Under Akufo-Addo, the media outlets are closed, attacks on journalists are multiplying and Ghana has lost its place in the press freedom rankings. It's as if a culture of impunity is emerging, "he added.
The deputy, also a former Deputy Minister of Education, spoke after contradictory reports about torture of two journalists, with: modernghana.com by national security agents.
Emmanuel Britwum and Emmanuel Ajafor Abugri were arrested for attempting to steal trade secrets from competing brands electronically.
Mr. Ablakwa rejected this allegation that it was just a smoke curtain to cover up the government's real agenda of hounding critical news outlets.
The charges against the two men were never raised during the interrogation, including choking, ruthless beating, prohibition to consult a lawyer, as well as the removing their computers and pbadwords against their will, said Ablakwa.
Instead, he revealed that Modernghana.com workers had been questioned about stories they had made against the government, including a call for the resignation of the Minister of National Security.
"The investigations have nothing to do with cybercrime. Why does the statement of national security against the two men not mention cybercrime? He asked.
There is growing impunity-Kpebu
For his part, Martin Kpebu, a private legal practitioner, described the impunity of arrest and alleged torture.
"Impunity will not go away," Kpebu told Newsfile.
According to him, the attacks against the journalist under this government are an irony because this government has been presented as a friend of the media.
Kpebu wants the president to accept responsibility for what is happening. Many people voted for this president because of his human rights credentials, he said.
He therefore called on members of society who have a fair thought to stand up against "impunity" because it is likely to affect everyone.
"They first came to the Socialists, and I did not speak because I was not a socialist. Then they came to pick up the trade unionists and I did not speak because I was not a trade unionist. Then they came for the Jews and I did not speak because I was not Jewish. Then they came to get me – and there was no one left to speak for me. Kpebu quoted Martin Niemöller to support his statement.
