WHY: |
According to recent statistics from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), South Florida is leading the country in terms of new HIV diagnoses, and the state as a whole has the highest concentration of people living with HIV . As the largest nonprofit HIV / AIDS service organization in the world, with more than one million patients in care, AHF has proven experience in the care of HIV patients and in the guarantee that they receive the wide range of sensitive services they need to stay alive. With the changes underway in Medicaid-managed healthcare plans, Anthems' denial of access to HIV specialists for people living with HIV who currently receive care from doctors they know and in whom they trust their lives at the AHF, will disrupt the vital care on which nearly 2,000 HIV-positive people have counted to stay alive. |
|||
Following several attempts by AHF officials, just last week, to reach an agreement with Anthem to guarantee access to their FADH-expert doctors at nearly 2,000 people living with HIV, Anthem continued to deny this life-saving access.
Following the national commitment of President Trumps to eradicate HIV in the United States by 10 years, said in his speech on the state of the Union, the Anthems denial of access to primary care insurance for patients in Broward and Miami-Dade counties, the epicenter of HIV epidemic in the country, goes to the against the complete treatment of this devastating epidemic. This action by Anthem eliminates the choice of patients to continue to consult doctors they trust and will directly interrupt their care. AHF sensitized the officials of the Floridas Agency for Health Administration (AHCA) to this problem and continued to support the actions of Anthem.
It is deplorable that Anthem has chosen to play with the lives of thousands of people living with HIV and deny them the opportunity to continue to consult doctors they trust, "said Michael Kahane, Chief of the Office of the South of the FADG. We call on the anthem and state officials to stop playing politics and protect the pockets of Hymn leaders and put the lives of HIV patients first!
