A newly developed artificial intelligence system produces better quality cardiac scans compared to traditional modalities, but with no contrast required.
The technology, known as Virtual Native Enhancement or VNE, combines enhanced T1 heart maps with MRI cine to create images superior to contrast enhanced cardiac MRI images. After developing and testing it on more than 2,500 cardiomyopathy datasets, AI has better grasped the evidence of scarring on patients’ hearts.
This is an important breakthrough, especially if its developers can extend the technology to other patient populations, Christopher Kramer, MD, chief of the cardiovascular medicine division at UVA Health, said Tuesday.
“Being able to identify a scar in the heart, an important contributor to the progression of heart failure and sudden cardiac death, without contrast, would be very important,” Kramer added in a statement. “CMR scans would be performed without contrast, which would save costs and any risk, albeit low, of the contrast agent. “
