The Airbus A380 aircraft, the world's largest superjumbo jet, is completing its long-haul journeys after 11 years of production.
Airbus announced Thursday that it would stop building the A380 jet in 2021 due to disappointing sales.
The European aerospace group took what it called the "painful decision" after Emirates, the largest A380 customer, reduced its exceptional order from 53 aircraft to 14.
Airbus has relied heavily on the A380, equipped with state-of-the-art technology and space that can accommodate more than 550 people, to compete with 747's Boeing, a 50-year-old rival. At the launch, Airbus predicted the sale of 1,200 superjumbo jets. But he has only sold 234 so far.
Airbus expects China to be one of the A380's leading customers, with more than 200 orders in 20 years. However, to date, China Southern Airlines is the only Chinese buyer of the jet with an order of five people.
Bloomberg announced last year that Airbus has offered to transfer some of the A380's production to China in exchange for large orders. However, the plan did not succeed.
