Airtel Nigeria reportedly began talks with the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) and the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) about the possible listing of its shares on the local stock exchange.
A meeting was recently held at the headquarters of the Nigerian Communications Commission in Abuja and brought together representatives of the three organizations.
Among them were Bharti Airtel Africa's Managing Director and CEO, Raghunath Mandava; the General Manager of Airtel Nigeria Segun Ogunsanya; Oscar Onyema, CEO of the Nigerian Stock Exchange; and Executive Vice President of the CNC, Professor Umar Danbatta.
According to reports, two senior IBTC officials from Stanbic attended the meeting and representatives from the Committee on Security and Trade also attended the meeting.
Nigerian journalist Punch has learned that Ateltel could register on the Nigerian Stock Exchange in response to its main competitor on the Nigerian market, indicating MTN Nigeria that it would seek an IPO by mid-year.
A bill also aims to force Nigerian telecommunications operators to register on the Nigerian Stock Exchange.
Professor Danbatta of the NCC told reporters that she was pleased with Ateltel's expansion program and the broadband penetration made possible by Airtel and other carriers.
Mandava, CEO of Airtel Africa, has described Nigeria as Airtel's largest and most dynamic market in Africa.
He added that Airtel was committed to investing heavily in Nigeria and had the mission to contribute to the country's digitization.
The boss of the ESN had not made any comment on this yet.
