AJMC® Study Finds Health Systems Do Not Compete with Retailers in Diabetes Care Performance

CRANBURY, N.J .– (BUSINESS WIRE) – Write in the April
problem
of The American Journal of Managed Care® (AJMC®)
researchers looking at diabetes care in Minnesota clinics found that
publicly report care measures did not result in health systems
sufficiently improve their lower performing clinics to compete with
competitors, a finding that runs counter to the
economic theory that retail competition encourages suppliers to improve
quality of health care.

Applying the principles of market competition to health care is an idea
it has been around for decades. In this article of the policy, "Make

researchers sought to validate this theory by checking whether the quality of
poor clinics improved in response to their higher performance
counterparties. They estimated the results of 654 clinics offering
diabetes care between 2006 and 2013. Minnesota has begun to demand that the
diabetes care measures in 2010, but does not penalize clinics for not
comply.

While diabetes care has generally improved, poor clinics have fallen
further behind the high-performance clinics; clinics that were already
performing well improved even more.

Consumers may not be aware of quality measures, according to the study. In
