Akatsi South Municipal Police Command has arrested more than 16 people for flouting security protocols in the event of a COVID-19 pandemic.

The offenders, including 11 men and 5 women, were arrested for not wearing nasal masks.

They were arrested at Akatsi Main Market during a special Ghanaian police operation to help prevent the spread of the virus.

Chief Superintendent Joseph Atsu Dzineku, commander of Akatsi South Municipal Police, said the operation was aimed at implementing the president’s directive on COVID-19.

The offenders, most of whom are young people between the ages of 20 and 25, were subsequently released on bail for police investigation. Mr Dzineku said police would continue to enforce the guidelines since the virus was no respect for people.

He warned that people who violated protocols would be arrested and prosecuted to deter others.

“Our food vendors and members of the general public must be looking for us, we will come down heavily on them if they continue to ignore these guidelines,” he said.
