Police in Akatsi, in the South Akatsi municipality of the Volta region, on Tuesday arrested three suspects in connection with a home burglary in Ayitikope.

The incident was reported around 11:45 p.m. on Saturday, May 29 at the residence of Mr. Atsu Makafui Kumordzi, a popular lotto operator, owner of Makafui and Sons Company Limited, a licensed private lotto company.

Checks carried out by the Ghana News Agency (GNA) with police sources revealed that the suspects had been arrested in separate hiding places in Akatsi and Dabala.

Chief Superintendent Joseph Atsu Dzineku, the South Akatsi Municipal Police Commander, who led a task force of the Ghana Police Service Police Anti-Theft Unit, revealed to GNA their outfit after collecting enough information regarding the theft of the businessman, arrested the trio for questioning and further action.

Mr Dzineku said the suspects Ali Dzibo, 35, and Sampson Agbenyega, 22, were arrested in Dabala, also in the South Tongu district of the Volta region, while the other suspect, Zakari Omaru, 46, a drug dealer, was apprehended in Akatsi.

Chief Superintendent Dzineku further said that an unspecified sum of money, bank check books and cell phones were found after a search.

He also said the suspects had been transferred to Accra by the Police Anti-Theft Unit for further questioning.

“We are still investigating and all those involved in this dangerous act would be brought to justice,” he added.

Mr. Kumordzi’s residence was ransacked by fully armed thieves, numbering about 12, at night while the occupants were sleeping.

The robbers, who were shooting at random during the operation, fled with a huge sum of money and a few personal effects before ultimately causing a massive laceration to Mr. Kumordzi’s forehead with gunshot wounds to his thigh.

The victim has since been treated and released from the hospital.
