The four-time Olympic medalist confirmed his impending retirement in Kitzbuhel this weekend, ending a 17-year World Cup career.
"One last big start for the world championships in Åre, after that I'll look at this great sport aside," Svindal wrote on his Instagram account.
Injuries make victims
The alpine skier won eight World Championship medals in his illustrious career (winning the World Cup title in 2007 and 2009), but he has been injured in recent years.
However, Svindal managed to come back last year to win the Olympic gold downhill in Pyeongchang, becoming the oldest skier to win the Olympic gold.
However, the Norwegian – who totals 36 career World Cup victories – was forced to leave Kitzbuhel this weekend after suffering a knee injury during a training session.

"Skiing has given me more than I could dream of. Thank you," continued one of Norway's most successful skiers.
"I write this with butterflies in the belly, but also a smile on my face.I think it's a good sign that it's the right decision."
Svindal confirmed that he would rest his body until his last race at the World Championships in Are, where the 36-year-old won his first world titles in 2007.
