Joyce Bawa Mogtari, badistant to former President John Mahama, has decried what she calls the abuse of the national security apparatus for clerical interests.
She noted that if the police had been allowed to perform their constitutional duties and arrest ModernGhana, the public would have a different debate today.
She argued that the police, together with the Attorney General's Office, would know what the charges of violation of rights could be based on the badumption that the crime had been committed.
She declared this in Saturday's TV3 political program, The Key Points. The panel discussed the arrest and detention of two journalists on the online news portal ModernGhana, created by national security agents.
Joyce Bawa warned that if the problem was not handled well, it would encourage citizens to take initiatives to protect themselves from uninvited and unidentified guests.
She observed that since the badault on the partial election of Ayawaso West Wuogon, there appears to be some overlap in the duties of the police and national security.
According to her, these shortcomings should be directly attributed to President Nana Akufo-Addo.
She said, "There is a good reason why the president chairs the National Security Council. It is to avoid current situations. "
"When these questions begin to speculate and permeate our social discussions, they create impressions: chaos reigns. That there is no one in charge. "
"There are clear reasons why the Constitution requires us to have a National Security Council."
Joyce Bawa said that national security agents after causing violations of the Constitution and violating the basic rights of citizens did not come forward to defend their actions.
It is, she said, usually the moment when they take their proper position without saying anything.
"Police officers who have not been informed or informed of the case are then obliged to defend the indefensible."
According to her, the public is obliged to defend itself and protect its own rights.
She said that if the police had visited the ModernGhana office with search warrants and arrest warrants, there would have been no fight.
Any law-abiding citizen, she said, would willingly follow the police in this situation, contrary to what happened to the two journalists.
She warned that if these anomalies are not corrected, chaos will eventually cause security problems.
She called for consistency in how these issues are handled so that the public has confidence in the police.
