President Tshisekedi is best known for being the son of the late leader of the opposition, Etienne Tshisekedi, considered one of the most prominent advocates of democracy in the DRC.

The Union for Democracy and Social Progress (UDPS) party led by Mr. Tshisekedi was founded in 1982 by his father, who made it the largest party of the opposition.
