Odododiodoo MP Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye indicated that President Akufo-Addo could be behind those fighting for gay rights in the country.
The former Minister of Youth and Sports, who supported the Ghanaian Sexual Human Rights and Family Values Promotion Bill that was tabled in Parliament for adoption, observed that the fighters’ stance against the bill could be government sponsored.
Speaking to Mugabe Maase on the Gumbe show on TV XYZ on Thursday night, lawmakers suggested that the fact that President Akufo-Addo’s lead lawyer in the 2020 election petition Akoto Ampaw is among some influential academics fighting for gay rights to be recognized in Ghana indicate that the group is supported by the government.
The MP said he did not trust Akufo-Addo’s neutrality on lesbianism and gayism as he could not speak out against gayism and lesbianism and its related acts in an interview on an international platform .
Homosexuality is illegal in Ghana, but President Akufo-Addo has said there are not enough activists for legalizing LGBTQI.
“I don’t believe that in Ghana, so far, a sufficiently strong coalition has emerged that has this impact on public opinion that will say change it, then let’s have a new paradigm in Ghana,” Akufo-Addo reportedly said. in an interview on Al Jazeera’s ‘Talk To Al Jazeera’ hosted by Jane Dutton in November 2017.
About fifteen professionals in various fields, including law and academia, submitted a memo to parliament opposing the anti-LGBTQI + bill to the chagrin of most Ghanaians and the clergy.
The scholarly group wants the bill to be rejected because supporters of the bill have provided no data or evidence to suggest that there is such a threat, beyond recourse to certain dogmatic religious principles and so-called Ghanaian family values,
They include: Senior Counsel for President Nana Akufo-Addo at the 2020 Election Petition Hearing, Akoto Ampaw, Professor Kofi Gyimah-Boadi, Dr Rose Kutin-Mensah and the Executive Director of the Center for the Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana), Professor H Kwasi Prempeh.
The others are Professor Audrey Gadzekpo, Professor Kwame KariKari, Professor Raymond Atuguba and Dr Yao Graham.
The others are: Professors Dzodzi Tsikata, Kwasi Adu-Amankwah, Kofi Ofei-Nkansah, Dr Kojo Asante, Akunu Dake, Tetteh Homerku-Adjjei and Professor Emerita Takyiwaa Manuh.
Doubts
Nii Lante Vanderpuye believes that the pressure on Parliament to abandon anti-LGBTQI is well orchestrated by the government and its foreign influencers.
“When President Akufo-Addo was sworn in, some leaders from the Western world came to visit him. Some come from Austria; you can check their background. French President Macron came to visit him; you can also check his background; you think if he isn’t [of the LGBTQI advocates], he would have married a woman of more than 60 years?]. “
He continued: “The German President (SIC) also came to visit us; go ask him about his background. The Italian Prime Minister also came to visit; you can also check his background. All these people who came to visit him are part of the plea that President Akufo-Addo spoke about.
“Advocacy is not only local, but also international. And the international organizations that want to persuade people to accept this [LGBTQI+] look for educated people who can influence public discourse. Don’t be surprised that the president’s lawyer is leading the team. He led the President to the Supreme Court for almost 4 months and as he continued to speak in court he has become popular and people listen to him when he speaks. he observed.
He said Professor Gadzekpor is a renowned educator at the University of Ghana who is very influential, which is why she has been strategically added to the gay rights group.
The former minister does not believe gay rights will be legalized in Ghana.
