President Akufo-Addo
President Akufo-Addo said Monday, August 5, 2019, a holiday, would be celebrated across the country.
The feast that marks the feast of the founders falls on Sunday, August 4, 2019.
However, the President by Executive Instrument (E.I) postponed the holiday to Monday, August 5, 2019.
According to a statement signed by Interior Minister Ambrose Dery, the general public is invited to take note of the upcoming holidays.
Founders' Day
A new bill to amend the Public Holidays Act, 2018, was introduced in Parliament by Interior Minister Ambrose Dery and pbaded to amend the 2001 Holidays Act.
The new amendment canceled three holidays and introduced two new holidays.
This decision followed a proposal by President Akufo-Addo that August 4 should be celebrated as Founders' Day in memory of successive generations of Ghanaians who helped liberate the country from colonial rule. September 21 will also be remembered as a day of commemoration for Dr. Kwame. Nkrumah, Ghana's first president, played a key role in the March 6 independence struggle.
The holidays concerned are the Republic Day, which falls on July 1, the African Union (AU) party, which falls on May 25 and the founder's day, the day of Kwame's birthday. Nkrumah, September 21st.
The bill explained that August 4 was a holiday instead of Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day, as the real struggle for Ghana's independence began on August 4, 1947 when Ghanaian patriots like George Alfred Grant, JB Danquah, RA Awoonor-Williams, Edward Akufo-Addo, Ebenezer Ako Adjei and some leaders formed the Gold Coast United Convention (UGCC) founded on the founding of the 1868 Fante Confederacy and the 1897 Native Rights Society for the independence of Ghana.
