The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Ashanti region says President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has done too little for residents to deserve any recognition.
Its regional secretary, Kwame Zu who spoke about Eyewitness News, suggested that years after Akufo-Addo’s government took office, he only engaged in groundbreaking ceremonies, unlike the large-scale projects undertaken by the former administration led by Mahama.
“It is surprising to state with amazement that five years after the start of the government of President Akufo-Addo, he continues to cut the grass in the Ashanti region. So I do not know what fresh breath President Akufo-Addo went to breathe in the Ashanti region.
Kwame Zu’s comments follow the president’s recent tour of the Ashanti region.
He cited abandoned projects, ill-informed political decisions and the lack of continuity in governance as some of the reasons he believes the NPP has been unresponsive to voters in the Ashanti region.
“Under our [NDC] era, we have done a lot of development projects for Asanteman. I’m not sure what specific projects in question the president is touring the Ashanti region for. But I’m told it’s a thank you tour. I would have thought that, thank you, the tours will have as an accompaniment monumental projects for which people will feel that their votes are not in vain. But this is not the case.”
Despite the many achievements and social interventions that the nuclear power plant has touted to its credit in the Ashanti region, the NDC describes them as “non-existent”.
Kwame Zu therefore cannot understand why the locals will continue to live in difficult conditions given their overwhelming support for the ruling party.
“I’m trying to understand why Nana Akufo-Addo will like to brag about the non-existent projects he bragged about. I don’t think that’s the right treatment that should be given to the people who made him president and retained him. Asanteman deserves better, ”he added.
