President Akufo-Addo argued that Ghana's excessive dependence on imports was the cause of the depreciation of the cedi.

According to a Pulse.com.gh report, the president explained that the local currency would be appreciated if Ghanaians started using locally made products.

According to him, public discourse should begin to focus more on the structural problems of the cedi.

The local currency has continued to fall since the beginning of 2019, from 4.9 GHc to more than 5.5 GHc to the US dollar.

The business community has particularly deplored the situation, calling on the government to take measures to save the situation.

The cedi, however, experienced a marginal appreciation this week, selling at GH ¢ 5.3 for a dollar on Tuesday, March 19, 2019.

President Akufo-Addo called on the public to mitigate imports, insisting that this would only strengthen foreign economies to the detriment of Ghana's own economy.
