President Akufo-Addo said that he had instructed the Attorney General to submit a bill to Parliament to combat the phenomenon of political vigilance.
According to him, the legislation aims to force political parties to dissolve all their self-defense groups across the country.
In his speech on the state of the nation, the President had already warned that he would be forced to enact a law if the NPP and the NDC did not meet to find a solution to the emerging wave of militia .

However, in a recent statement, he said that voters have the responsibility to pbad legislation providing the necessary sanctions against party vigilance.
This letter followed directly from an open letter sent to him by NDC President Samuel Ofosu Ampofo.
"Given that the constitutional responsibility for the maintenance of public order in our country rests with the executive, that is to say, the President of the Republic, in accordance with my statement to the Parliament of the 21st. February 2019 of the Message of the State of the Nation, I gave instructions to the Attorney General, without prejudice to the result of the commitment made between the NPP and the NDC to prepare and submit to the Parliament, as soon as possible, specific legislation to combat the phenomenon of vigilance and provide appropriate sanctions against its appearance, "reads the statement.
"I believe that the process of parliamentary enactment provides every citizen with sufficient space to contribute to the enactment of effective and efficient legislation, the application of which will enable us to rid our country of violence related to politics, an evolution that can only benefit Ghanaian democracy and the maintenance of public order.Adds Nana Addo.

This comes after the NDC has suggested that it should not just be a meeting between the party and the NPP to solve the problem of political vigilance.
The opposition party wanted the inclusion in the dialogue of third parties, composed of civil society organizations, but this proposal was rejected by the president.
