Akufo-Addo to welcome ECOWAS Heads of State on the situation in Guinea | General news

President of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), President Akufo-Addo will convene on Thursday, September 15, 2021 an extraordinary summit of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS to reflect on the political situation in the Republic of Guinea.

It will be recalled that Lieutenant-Colonel Mamady Doumbouya, head of the special forces group, overthrew President Alpha Condé in a successful coup in Conakry, Guinea, on Sunday, September 5, 2021.

Following this incident, the Conference of Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS convened an extraordinary session by videoconference on September 8, 2021, under the chairmanship of President Akufo-Addo, to take stock of the political situation in Guinea as well as than on the political transition in Mali.

The Authority decided, among other things, to immediately send a high-level ECOWAS mission to Guinea to assess the situation on the ground.

Speaking to reporters at a press conference in Accra today September 15, 2021, Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration Minister Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey said the summit should provide heads of state and ECOWAS government report on their visit to the West African state and deliberate on the way forward.

She said that “the next extraordinary session of the ECOWAS Authority is therefore being held to allow the high-level mission report to the Authority, after which the latter will deliberate and consider the next steps to be taken for the restoration of the country. to the path of democratic governance and constitutional rule

“The summit will therefore have a single agenda where I will submit to the Authority the report of the ECOWAS High Level Mission in Guinea, which was undertaken on Friday, September 10, 2021,” she added.

She indicated that currently, seven (7) Heads of State and Government have confirmed their participation. Nigeria will be represented at the level of the Vice-President; Sierra Leone and The Gambia will be represented by their foreign ministers, adding that the session will also see the participation of the President and Vice-President of the ECOWAS Commission.

Dams

The summit is expected to lead to the blocking of some main roads and traffic management in Accra to facilitate the smooth movement of ECOWAS Heads of State from Kotoka International Airport (KIA) to the meeting venue.

The roads that will be temporarily closed are the Opeibea Road along the Liberation Road to Independence Avenue to the National Theater and on Gamel Abdul Nasser Avenue to the Kempinski Gold Coast Hotel .

The Director of Public Affairs of the Ghana Police Service, the Superintendent. Alexander Kwaku Obeng said police would be deployed at critical intersections on the KIA road at the Kempinski Hotel to keep traffic flowing and assist motorists on roads that would be used by dignitaries.
