Jostling for capitals

Even before the government has completed the process of splitting the six new regions into three of the existing regions, there are some shocks in some areas where the city should become the regional capital.

In the Bono East area, Techiman was named capital of the region.

In the Savannah region created from the current northern region, some groups have begun lobbying for Damongo to become the regional capital. Others are also campaigning for Salaga to be named regional capital.

In the region of Ahafo, four cities; Goaso, Duayaw-Nkwanta, Bechem and Kenyasi would lead the race at the regional capital.

Reports suggest that Bechem or Goaso will eventually be named regional capital.

In the region of Oti, the head of the population of Buem launched an intense campaign for Jasikan to be named capital of the region of the new Oti.

At the same time, Kwesi Jonah, senior researcher at the Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG), said only cities with significant infrastructure should be considered capital cities of newly created regions.

He added that infrastructure such as a good road network, adequate accommodation facilities for future government officials should be prerequisites for capital selection in the new regions in order to speed up development in the regions, as planned.
