President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo after breaking his silence on the public backlash against besieged Health Minister Kwaku Agyeman-Manu cannot be a tacit endorsement of the actions of the minister who confessed to not following due process in his pursuit for Sputnik V vaccines for the country.
Speaking in the Bono region on Tuesday, August 10, 2021, during his two-day tour of the region, President Akufo-Addo said, “There are a lot of people from the Bono region in my government; including the Minister of Health, who is currently receiving slaps [from Ghanaians]. But private lawyer Martin Kpebu, in an interview MyNewsGh.com followed on Accra-based Joy FM, told host Ernest Manu that the president’s comment can be interpreted to mean two things.
“The president’s reaction to this place is not an indication that Mr. Agyeman-Manu will not be sacked or that Mr. Agyeman-Manu will not resign … do not forget culturally and even ethically, Mr. Agyeman-Manu is a great opinion leader there, ”said lawyer Martin Kpebu, who is seeking support from citizens in calling on parliament to accuse Agyeman-Manu of perjury.
“… So how the hell is the president going to stand there and say, Mr. Agyeman-Manu, that you did everything wrong?” Naturally, he would have to make it a light moment and then when the president in Accra, he would do what is necessary, ”he opined.
Health Minister Kwaku Agyeman-Manu has come under heavy criticism for breaking procurement processes while trying to get Sputnik V vaccines for Ghana.
This is because Kwaku Agyeman-Manu confessed to the committee that he signed the agreement with the middlemen without parliament or cabinet approval. He also did not seek approval from the Public Procurement Authority (PPA) before finalizing the deal with the middlemen, although the attorney general officially advised against the deal.
The ad hoc bipartisan parliamentary committee that reviewed the deal recommended, among other things, that the finance minister take action to recover more than $ 2 million paid to Sheikh Ah Makhtoum for undelivered vaccines.
The sheikh responded to a letter from the Minister of Health asking for reimbursement since he reimbursed the money to the government safe.
