Akufo Addo In Black President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo

The Federation of Women Lawyers (IFAD) has described President Akufo-Addo's surprising comments on Ghanaian women at the Women Deliver conference in Canada.

According to IFAD Executive Director Irene Abochi Nyahe, some people with a good understanding of the country's population dynamics and its impact on development should make the kind of comments made by Mr. Akufo-Addo at the conference.

In his contribution to the Women Deliver conference in Canada, the president said he still did not see the dynamism of Ghanaian women.

"We do not see enough dynamism and activism on the part of those who seek. I speak of dynamism where it counts … electing members of Parliament, controlling political parties, because it is they who allow our societies to make decisions.

"We are talking about decisions, not wishes and hopes, we are talking about decisions that will make a difference," said the president.

Addressing Francis Abban on Thursday morning in Starr, Abochi Nyahe said IFAD was stunned by the president's comments.

"We are surprised to say the least. In any case, if you understand the development of the country, you do not need to make such a statement. If 51% of the country is composed of women, there is no need to marginalize such a population.

"We have a culture that undermines women and puts them in the background. The story has changed lately. Where is the bill on positive action? We must respect women and know that they can do many things, "she said.

Former Minister of Gender Nana Oye Lithur also said that the President's words made her cry.

"President Akufo-Addo made me cry, I cried watching the video. It is very unfortunate that a lawyer specializing in human rights advocacy speaks and addresses gender issues in the way that he has addressed. He could not even get his data properly. Even because of the representation of women in his office, he could not get that right. "
