Kumbungu MP Ras Mubarak called President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s latest State of the Nation Address (SONA) for his first term in government empty and unimpressive.

He said the president’s projection of strong economic growth was far from reality and Ghanaians across the country had not experienced such growth.

Mr Mubarak made the comment in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in reaction to President Akufo-Addo’s last SONA in the Seventh Parliament of the Fourth Republic, as required by the 1992 Constitution.
The Seventh Legislature dissolves at midnight on January 6, 2021.

President Akufo-Addo notably said that his government was able to implement large flagship programs, achieve single-digit inflation and reduce budget deficits with three consecutive years of primary surpluses.

It also ensured a relatively stable exchange rate, a significant improvement in the current account with three consecutive years of trade surpluses, strong foreign exchange reserve cushions and sharply reduced lending rates.

However, Mubarak said Ghanaians are not feeling the change the president has spoken of over the past four years, adding that people are still struggling to survive.

He said many businesses were at a standstill as a result of COVID-19 and even before that there were genuine difficulties in the country.

Mr. Mubarak expressed his dismay at the silence of President Akufo-Addo on the many cases of violence and death observed during the elections of December 7, 2020.

However, Fuseini Issah, MP for Okaikoi North, called the President’s presentation excellent, given the number of achievements his government has recorded over the past four years.

He said the December 7 polls were generally peaceful and the violence observed was just isolated cases.

“The police have already opened investigations into these cases and I hope the culprits will be brought to justice,” he said.

Mr. Issah congratulated President Akufo-Addo for paying tribute to the memory of the first president under the Fourth Republic, Flt. Lieutenant Jerry John Rawlings, who sadly passed away on November 12, 2020.
