Despite mixed reviews, the Disney live remake of Aladdin has created a huge opening weekend at the American box office.

Guy Ritchie's 1992 animation grossed $ 112.7 million on his first weekend, surpbading expectations that the film would reach $ 100 million.

So it's a bigger opening weekend than Jon Favreau's The jungle Book, which returned $ 103.2 million in its first week, but failed to reverse the program led by Emma Watson. The beauty and the Beast remake, which brought in $ 174.7 million.

In this version of AladdinWill Smith plays the role of the Genie, who changes form, while Mena Mbadoud plays the role of the eponymous "street rat" who falls in love with Princess Jasmine (Naomi Scott).

The success of the film at the box office is perhaps a surprise because of the initial and adverse reaction to the look of Will Smith's blue Genie during his first revelation in the trailer.

The cast of Billy Magnussen, a white actor, in the role of a newly created prince, as well as Will Smith's revival of the song "Prince Ali" also aroused negative reactions.

However, the first reactions to the film promised that it was not really terrible, with Digital Spy describing it as "a sumptuous and pleasing narrative, but not enough of a whole new world to succeed fully".

Aladdin is in cinemas now.
