Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, a veteran of Algeria, informed the Constitutional Council that he was resigning on Tuesday, state television announced after the army called for his dismissal.

Bouteflika "officially informed the Constitutional Council of the end of his term as President of the Republic" from Tuesday, announced a teletypewriter on television.

The report was published a few hours after the head of the armed forces, Ahmed Gaid Salah, called for the immediate launch of an indictment procedure against Bouteflika, the army having rejected the announcement of his resignation before the end of his term at the end of the month.

In power for two decades, Bouteflika has been under increasing pressure to resign since his decision to run for a fifth term while he was rarely seen in public after suffering a stroke in 2013.

The 82-year-old, who uses a wheelchair, announced last month that he would step down from the candidacy for a new term. On Monday, his office announced that he would resign before the expiry of his term on April 28.

The maneuvers failed to stifle public anger as hundreds of students were back on the street Tuesday.
