Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika will resign before the expiry of his term on April 28, his office announced Monday, after a succession of Loyalists have deserted the sick leader in recent days.

Bouteflika will take "steps to ensure that state institutions continue to function during the transition period," the presidency said in a brief statement issued by the official APS news agency.

The 82-year-old would resign "before 28 April 2019" after "important decisions" were made, he added, without specifying when these changes would occur.

Bouteflika is under increasing pressure to withdraw from power since his decision to run for a fifth term while he was rarely seen in public after suffering a stroke in 2013.

The Algerian leader announced last month that he was withdrawing from the race and postponing the April elections, which angered protesters who saw it as a ploy to extend his two decades of power.

In the face of mbadive street protests taking place in the North African country, a succession of former supporters of the Bouteflika party have deserted the president in recent days.

On Tuesday, the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces, Ahmed Gaid Salah, appointed by Bouteflika in 2004, said the president had to resign or be declared medically incapable of governing by parliament, using his constitutional powers.

And Wednesday, the key ally of the coalition, the National Rally for Democracy (RND) led by the recently dismissed prime minister, Ahmed Ouyahia, called for the resignation of Bouteflika "with the aim of smoothing the transition period ".

Under the constitution, once his resignation has been presented, the Speaker of the Upper House of the Algerian Parliament, Abdelkader Bensalah, would badume the duties of interim leader for a maximum period of 90 days during which a presidential election would be held. organized.
