Algerian police said Sunday they opened an investigation after a video broadcast online showed demonstrators beaten by security forces.

Thousands of people took to the streets of the capital, Algiers, the latest in recent rallies against the ruling clbad in the context of an ongoing political crisis in the country.

In a video widely broadcast on social media, we see on the ground two men being beaten by police with truncheons.

Police chief Abdelkader Kara Bouhadba has ordered the opening of an investigation into the film "showing clashes with police forces likely during Friday's protest," said the directorate of National Security (DGSN) in a statement.

The DGSN stressed "the need to investigate … to determine responsibility and take the measures required by law" in a message on his Facebook page.

Scuffles erupted at the end of the Algiers rally when police officers seized the Berber flag – banned from demonstrating – from demonstrators' hands and removed it from public lighting.

The police presence was important at Friday's rally, as protesters continued their efforts for a political overhaul after troubled leader Abdelaziz Bouteflika resigned in April following mbad protests.

Acting President Abdelkader Bensalah has called for a national dialogue to pave the way for the elections, but the protesters want Bouteflika's personalities to withdraw before the vote.
