Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika will step down before April 28, after two decades in power, the official news agency said on Monday.
Bouteflika, who is 82 years old and in poor health, has faced mbad protests and pressure from the army for several weeks, demanding the end of his 20-year rule.
APS said Bouteflika would make important decisions to ensure "the continuity of state institutions" before resigning.
Last week, Algeria's ruling party coalition ally called on the president to resign, exerting pressure on Bouteflika after the army chief also demanded he be declared unfit for office.
Bouteflika uses a wheelchair and has rarely been seen in public since his debilitating stroke in 2013. The president overturned an earlier decision and agreed on March 11 not to run for a fifth term in the April elections. but have now been postponed. .
He however refrained from retiring as head of state, claiming that he intended to stay until the adoption of the law. a new constitution.
