Alvaro Morata has joined Atletico Madrid on an 18 month loan from Chelsea.

Morata completed his medical studies with Atletico Sunday before finalizing an agreement to bring him back to the club where he began his career in youth.

Atletico is expected to face two former Morata clubs next month – with matches against Real Madrid (9 February – La Liga) and Juventus (20 February – Champions League).

Morata joined Chelsea after Real for a five-year deal for a record 57 million pounds sterling in July 2017, while Antonio Conte was in charge.

He scored seven goals in his first eight games for the club, but finished his first season at Stamford Bridge with just 11 Premier League goals.

Head coach Maurizio Sarri insisted on abandoning the attacker after having preferred to play Eden Hazard in an advanced role.

Morata's loan change also comes after Gonzalo Higuain was loaned by Chelsea to Juventus for the rest of the season.

Chelsea has the option to extend the loan contract for one season or buy Higuain for £ 31m, according to Juventus.

The 31-year-old striker worked under Sarri during his stay in Naples.

Morata will join Diego Costa, former Chelsea striker, in Atletico, second in La Liga.
