Amazon last year rejected the idea of getting into the blockchain with AWS, but today that has changed. The company has announced a new service called Amazon Quantum Ledger Database or QLDB, which is a fully managed ledger database with central trusted authority. The service, which is launched today in Preview, offers an immutable journal, with only additions, that tracks the history of all changes, Amazon said.
And all changes are cryptographically linked and verifiable.
The company announced today the on-stage product at AWS: ReInvent, highlighting the other features of QLDB, including its transparent nature, its ability to be automatically resized or reduced, its ease of use and its speed. Amazon said the database could run two to three times more transactions than existing products.
He also announced a managed blockchain service.
"It will be really evolutionary. You'll have a much more flexible and robust set of APIs to make any kind of change or adjustment to the general ledger database, "said Andy Jbady, CEO of AWS, describing the new QLDB offer .
On the QLDB website, Amazon explains the new database in more detail:
Amazon QLDB is a new clbad of database that eliminates the need to participate in complex development efforts related to creating your own applications similar to those of a general ledger. With QLDB, the change history of your data is immutable – you can not change or delete it – and with cryptography you can easily check for unintentional data changes of your application. QLDB uses an immutable transaction log, called a log, that tracks every change in application data and maintains a complete and verifiable history of changes over time. QLDB is easy to use because it provides developers with a SQL-like API, a flexible document data model, and full transaction support. Since QLDB is also serverless, it automatically adapts to your application's requests. There are no servers to manage and no read or write limits to configure. With QLDB, you only pay for what you use.
QLDB was one of AWS announcements about the blockchain today. The company has also launched AWS Managed Blockchain, which can work with QLDB. (More details here).
"Amazon Managed Blockchain is a fully managed service that lets you configure and manage a scalable blockchain network with just a few clicks," Amazon said in an ad. The product eliminates the overheads needed to create the network and automatically adapts to the demands of thousands of applications running millions of transactions, he added.
It also manages your certificates, allows you to easily invite new members to join the network and keeps track of operational metrics such as the use of computing, memory and storage resources.
Managed Blockchain can replicate an immutable copy of your network activity in the Amazon Quantum Ledger (QLDB) database, allowing you to badyze network activity outside the network and better understand trends .
