Amazon is interested in purchasing Boost Mobile's prepaid wireless service from US carriers T-Mobile and Sprint, according to two sources familiar with the issue.
Amazon plans to buy Boost primarily for a wholesale contract that would allow the buyer to use T-Mobile's wireless network for at least six years, said one of the sources. Amazon would also be interested in any wireless spectrum that could be divested, the source said.
Amazon declined to comment. T-Mobile and Sprint did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
It was not immediately clear why the US online retail giant and its cloud service provider wanted the wireless network and its spectrum.
T-Mobile and Sprint have offered concessions, including the sale of Boost, to reduce their market share in the prepaid wireless business and to obtain regulatory approval for their planned merger of 26 billions of dollars.
The US Department of Justice should closely examine the buyer of a divested badet to ensure that it would remain viable and preserve competition.
Operators are also considering releasing wireless spectrum, or radio waves carrying data, in order to complete the merger.
