Amazon plans to launch a constellation of 3,236 satellites orbiting the Earth to increase broadband access.
The ambitious project, dubbed "Project Kuiper", was spotted by GeekWire in several public files of the company Kuiper Systems LLC, based in Washington.
GeekWire estimated that it could cost billions of dollars and put Amazon in competition with companies like SpaceX, which plans its own satellite Internet service.
Amazon has confirmed its plans in a statement to Business Insider. A spokeswoman said: "The Kuiper Project is a new initiative to launch a constellation of low Earth orbit satellites that will provide low-latency broadband connectivity to unserved or underserved communities around the world.
"This is a long-term project that aims to serve tens of millions of people who do not have access to basic broadband Internet access. We look forward to partnering with you." to this initiative with companies sharing this common vision. "
