Amazon workers demand fair pay conditions as company continues to reduce rivals

While online shoppers from around the world were pouring into Amazon's "Prime Day" mega-sale this week, the retail giant has been outraged by protesters, workers, and lawmakers for its dangerous working conditions. and its collaboration with Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Seattle protesters filed a petition of more than 270,000 signatures at Amazon's headquarters, asking it to stop exploiting workers and cooperating with ICE. Lawmakers, including Sen. Bernie Sanders and Representative Ilhan Omar, co-signed a letter to workplace safety and called for a thorough investigation into Amazon's working conditions on Tuesday, citing reports that Amazon workers would face severe physical and mental distress at work. Also on Tuesday, the antitrust committee of the House Judiciary Committee challenged an Amazon officer over allegations that the company was competing with its own vendors. We talk to Angeles Solis, principal organizer of the Make the Road New York workplace justice team, and Stacy Mitchell, co-director of the Institute for Local Self-Reliance, who testified at the Amazon topic on Tuesday before a subcommittee of the judiciary.
