The approval came despite protests from locals and activist groups. They fear that Arlington and Virginia are dealing with a wealthy society at the expense of the community, risking the exit of low-income people. They also pointed to complaints about Amazon's working conditions and compensation. Amazon and its promoters argued that the location in Virginia would create jobs, generate tax revenues and stimulate investment in the region.
It's a small victory at a time when Amazon is facing a strong reaction. The company abandoned the New York side of its headquarters after facing opposition from politicians for many of the reasons cited in Virginia. Approval is not so much a victory for the company as a relief at a time when its expansion plans are not guaranteed.
