PARIS: American singer Chris Brown and two other people are being held in Paris after a woman has filed a rape complaint, French officials said on Tuesday.

The singer, recipient of a Grammy Award, was arrested Monday on the basis of potential charges of aggravated rape and drug offenses and remained in detention on Tuesday, said a judicial official. Investigators still have two days to decide whether to let him go or file preliminary charges.

The Brown publicists at Sony Music did not want to comment immediately on the complaint or say what Brown, 29, was doing in Paris.

Brown has had repeated legal troubles since he pleaded guilty to the 2009 murder of his girlfriend, Rihanna. He completed his probation in this case in 2015, but continued to collide with the police.

The woman who complained said she met Brown and her friends in the night of January 15 to 16 at the club Crystal, in the 8th arrondissement, near the Champs-Elysees. Everyone then went to the Mandarin Oriental Hotel near Concorde Plaza in central Paris, according to the manager.

One of Brown's bodyguards is among the other detainees in the Paris investigation, according to the official. Neither officer was allowed to be publicly appointed to discuss the investigation.

The detention was initially reported by the French magazine Closer.

Brown is best known for his successes in the 2000s, such as "Run It" and "Kiss Kiss." It retains a hard core of fans, including nearly 50 million followers on Instagram. He posted Monday an Instagram photo of Paris that seemed to show in a nightclub.

He released a new single earlier this month and a new album is planned for this year. Six of his albums have gone platinum.
