Former Barcelona striker Emmanuel Amunike has urged the club to respect Lionel Messi’s final decision on his future.
The 33-year-old submitted a transfer request last summer but, following Josep Maria Bartomeu’s resignation as president, his future is now rather unclear.
Messi’s contract expires in June and he is believed to be waiting to see what kind of project the new president has to offer before deciding whether or not to stay.
“You never know what’s going to happen,” Amunike told Radio MARCA.
“The reality is you have to thank Messi for everything he has given Barcelona. But everything has its start and its end. He is not as young as him.
“But I will remember what Messi did for the club. If Messi leaves you have to respect him and thank him for what he did.”
Amunike joined Barcelona shortly after their current boss, Ronald Koeman, left the club.
“I’m happy for Koeman,” added the Nigerian. “It wasn’t that easy for him.
“Now they are in the Spanish Super Cup final and that will give the team more confidence.”
