An Accra psychiatric hospital forced to beg for food to feed its patients

The management of the Accra Psychiatric Hospital was forced to beg generous citizens to be kind enough to help feed the hospital inmates due to lack of funds.

YEN.com.gh The management of the Accra Psychiatric Hospital has appealed for help because it lacks financial means and therefore asks the public to feed its detainees.

The hospital, originally built as a prison, accommodates patients whose condition resembles that of a prison.

According to Myjoyonline.com, deprivation, neglect are the main themes of the state of the facility, as well as more and more recurrent incidents of violent patients.

The building was built in 1906 for a prison and then converted into a psychiatric hospital.

Today, the management is demanding rice, medicines and other basic necessities to support the needs of its 400 detainees who depend on a monthly budget allocation of 110,000 Ghc. But it would cost $ 8,500 to treat a patient with schizophrenia.

A hospital publicist told Joy FM on Wednesday, May 29, 2019: "You just lived a day in a hospital. I have been working there for 6 years.

The Accra Mental Hospital does not give up. Management has used ingenious means to feed and help their client, including begging.
