A TV commercial for a Brazilian bank featuring a transgender woman was withdrawn after the intervention of the country's president.
Banco do Brasil told AFP that the announcement had been withdrawn after Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro had an interview with the president of the state bank, Rubem Novaes.
According to the statement, the marketing director of the bank had also been dismissed, without giving further details.
The ad would focus on several young people, including a transbadual woman and several black youths, moving by the day, the Washington Post reported.
This decision is the latest in a series of anti-LGBTI measures by the far-right and openly homophobic president.
Earlier this week, Bolsonaro said he did not want Brazil to become a "gay paradise" for LGBTI tourists.
History of homophobia
Bolsonaro is known for his derogatory comments about the community and LGBTI minorities.
During its presidential campaign, LGBTI rights advocates expressed deep concern that the Bolsonaro presidency would usher in a new wave of terror for Brazil's LGBTI community.
In the past, he sadly said, "Yes, I am homophobic – and I am very proud of it". Bolsonaro also suggested that if parents saw their son "behaving a little cheerful", they would have to beat him "to make him normal," and that if he saw a gay couple in the street, he would "hit him" .
The former army captain also expressed his admiration for the Brazilian military junta, which ruled from 1964 to 1985. Thousands of people were arrested, tortured and executed during this period.
However, other cases of homophobic bursts of Bolsonaro have been widely ridiculed.
In March, the president of the far right tweeted the video of a man urinating another at the annual Carnaval Brazilian festival.
The president said it showed how the famous event had become morally corrupt. The tweet has since been deleted.
Creeping transphobia
Brazil is one of the deadliest countries for transgender people.
The country has one of the highest murder rates against trans people, with widespread and widespread violence against the trans community.
Transgender Europe, a trans people advocacy group, estimates that 125 trans people were killed in Brazil between January and September 2018.
Last month, many transbadual women were brutally murdered across the country.
According to TransLivesMatter, a website that monitors killings of transbadual women around the world, at least eight transbadual women have been murdered in Brazil since the end of March.
Some would have been tortured before being killed.
