Flight 300 left John F. Kennedy International Airport from New York to get to the Los Angeles International Airport when the plane struck a sign adjacent to the runway, told CNN on Port Authority spokesman, Steve Coleman.
The sign "tells the pilots that they are going down the runway," said Coleman. The plane struck the panel as it was slightly off-center during take-off, Coleman said.
The flight took off at 20:40, but was back at JFK at 21:09. and taxed at the door, American Airlines said in a statement. There were 101 pbadengers and eight crew members on board, and no injuries were reported, the airline said.
"American is swapping flight 300 for a new plane, while our team reviews the incident and inspects it," said American Airlines. "We never want to disrupt our clients' travel plans and we are sorry for the inconvenience."
