More than 180 CEOs signed a full page pro-abortion announcement in the New York Times on Monday with the strange and uninspiring title, "Do not ban equality". The big left-wing companies, including Ben & Jerry's, H & M and Tinder (of course) signed the advertisement, stating that "[i]It is time for companies to advocate for reproductive health care. "
These companies claim "Comprehensive reproductive health care, including abortion" is needed to "build diverse and inclusive lines of work."
This is a great irony to the extent that abortion disproportionately kills children of color. 64% of women who get abortions in the US are either African-American or Hispanic, according to a 2017 Report from Kaiser Health News. Abortion is the reason why the black population share in the United States is decreasing, not increasing. Abortion therefore complicates the hiring of a diverse workforce, and not easier for companies.
These companies also claim that anti-abortion legislation prevents them from "recruiting[ing] best talents from all states. But how is it? If the anti-abortion laws are so terrible and the pro-abortion laws are so wonderful, we would see people fleeing from the Red States to the blue states where many of these companies, such as Ben & Jerry's, Postmates and Square Inc., have their seat.
What we see, however, are the people leaving Blue states, such as California and New York, for states imposing lower taxes and offering greater economic mobility. If these companies were really concerned about their ability to recruit the best talent, they would focus on tax policy reform and not on abortion policy.
Companies also claim to "oppose policies that undermine health, independence and the ability to succeed fully in the workplace." But do these Liberals also support the "independence" of a worker who refuses to join a union he does not like? What about the "independence" of small business owners when they choose not to organize events that celebrate what they believe to be morally wrong? I doubt it a little.
This persistent animosity towards anti-abortion legislation is ridiculous and, in this case, misguided. If these companies are wondering why they do not have more diverse work environments and greater worker independence, they should look in the mirror.
