Prosecutors in northwestern France have opened an investigation for murder after an elderly man killed his wife, suffering from Alzheimer's disease. He then tried to commit suicide, the prosecutor's office announced on Friday.
"An 80-year-old man killed his 76-year-old woman with several stab wounds on Thursday in the family home in the Barrils village and then used a handgun to try to commit suicide," said Etienne de The deputy prosecutor of Evreux, Survilliers, told the French news agency AFP.
De Survilliers said that the murder and the attempted suicide were premeditated.
"The man left a letter in which he explained that he wanted to put an end to this situation, namely the pain of his wife. She was suffering from Alzeimer's disease, "said Survilliers.
The man alerted the gendarmes about what he had done, according to Survilliers. The police found the body of the woman and the badly injured husband.
The suspect "was hospitalized in Rouen (…) his condition has apparently stabilized since," added the prosecutor, adding that the suspect had not yet been questioned because of his state of health precarious.
