One thousand two hundred and fifty-two people have died as a result of a road accident since January 2019, reports The Finder.

A breakdown of this figure means that at least seven people die every day from the carnage of the road. That's two more than the average family size in Ghana.

The newspaper gave a full breakdown of the figures for accidents involving commercial vehicles, pbadenger cars and accidents involving pedestrians.

Data compiled by Ghana's Police Traffic and Traffic Department (MMTD) show a 3.3% increase in the number of commuters killed in road accidents between January and June 2019 compared to the same period in 2018.

According to the data, the number of commuters killed would have dropped from 1,212 in the first half of 2018 to 1,252 in the first half of 2019.

He revealed that men aged 18 and under were killed at 126 while men over 18 died at 808, bringing the total to 934.

On the other hand, 86 women under the age of 18 have lost their lives, while 232 women over the age of 18 have been killed in road accidents.

This brings to 318 the total number of women killed.

In addition, the number of pedestrians killed decreased by 7.16%, from 397 in the first quarter of 2018 to 378 during the same period in 2019.

1,503 stunned pedestrians

The number of pedestrians knocked down has also increased from 1,619 at the same time last year to 1,503 this year.

The data indicate that the number of people injured increased by 15.5% from 6,689 in the first half of last year to 7,043 during the same period in 2019.

According to the records, the total number of vehicles involved in accidents increased from 11,053 to 11,167, an increase of 1.03%.

364 killed in motorcycle accidents

Of the 1,585 motorcycle accident victims, 364 were killed and the number of motorcycles involved in accidents was 2,284, an increase of 16.6% from the 1,937 motorcycle accidents of the first half of 2018.

4,786 private vehicles involved in accidents

According to the data, the number of private vehicles involved in road accidents increased from 4,774 to 4,786 in 2019, an increase of 0.25%.

Private vehicles killed 348 commuters and injured 1,670 casualties.

4,133 commercial vehicles involved in accidents

It was found that commercial vehicles involved in accidents had decreased by 4.81%, from 4 342 in the first half of last year to 4 133 during the same period this year.

Commercial vehicles killed 540 commuters and injured 3,788 in the first six months of this year.

The number of reported cases increased by 1.47%, from 6,745 in the first half of last year to 6,844 during the same period this year.

Ghana has seen a reduction in the death rate from 27 vehicles out of 10,000 in 1999 to around eight out of every 10,000 vehicles in 2017, the use of motorcycles threatening gains made in other categories of users of the road lately.
