A 20-year-old man in Lucknow, India, was almost buried alive this week after the private hospital where he was admitted was unfairly pronounced dead.
Mohammad Furqan was involved in an accident on June 21 and was taken to hospital for treatment. He was in critical condition and after his family had exhausted his savings to pay his medical bills, the doctors declared him dead.
The devastated relatives of Furqan immediately began preparing for his funeral, but after his body was brought home by an ambulance, his older brother was shocked to see that he was still moving his limbs.
He warned the other members of the family and after making sure he did not see anything, they took him to another hospital where the doctors confirmed he was still alive.
"Devastated, we were preparing for the burial when some of us saw a movement of limbs," said Furqan 's brother, Mohammed Irfan. "We immediately took Furqan to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, where the doctors claimed that he was alive and placed him under respiratory badistance."
"We had earlier paid 7,000 rupees ($ 10,000) to the private hospital and when we told them we had no money, they declared Furqan 's death," added the brother.
Hospital doctors Ram Manohar Lohia told reporters that Fuqan was in critical condition, but that he certainly was not dead. He has a pulse, a blood pressure and his reflexes are effective.
The bizarre case attracted much media attention in India and local authorities were forced to open an investigation into how the private hospital was handling the business.
"We have learned of the incident and the case will be thoroughly examined," said Narendra Agarwal, Lucknow's chief medical officer.
