Eliyahu Gigi, 31, from Tel Aviv, is accused of stealing more than $ 1.7 billion in various cryptocurrencies. Gigi allegedly stole BTC, Ethereum and Dash from users in the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany.
Lawyer Yeela Harel, of the cyber department of the public prosecutor's office, filed a lawsuit against Gigi on July 17, according to a report released by Globes on the same day. Gigi was allegedly charged with theft, fraud and money laundering, among others.
According to the report, Harel's indictment alleges that Gigi has set up a network of fraudulent websites for the purpose of stealing cryptography using malware. He is accused of using various methods to cover his tracks, including using remote servers and moving stolen funds into different portfolios.
Gigi and his brother, a demobilized soldier, were reportedly arrested in June. The two men were suspected of having participated in an international phishing scam, but Harel only wanted to indict Gigi.
The police apparently first began investigating Gigi after receiving information suggesting that he was abandoning fraudulent links on the digital wallet forums. According to the report, Gigi would be linked to a website that seemed to have a downloadable wallet manager. However, Gigi seems to have collected and misappropriated user account credentials to steal their crypto.
As previously reported by Cointelegraph, a Microsoft employee was recently arrested on suspicion of stealing $ 10 million in crypto. Volodymyr Kvashuk allegedly stole and returned encrypted gift cards for Microsoft products, selling them to customers on the Internet.
