An outbreak of canine distemper in an animal shelter in Alabama required the temporary closure of the animal shelter.
The Gadsden Times announced that the Humane Society's pet rescue and adoption center in Gadsden would be closed Monday and will remain so until April 8, during animal treatment.
A spokeswoman for the center, Jessica Millican, said the outbreak had been confirmed by a local veterinarian.
A publication on the Humane Society's Facebook page indicates that distemper is a serious and often fatal disease. The virus, he says, is spread by inhalation by sneezing and coughing from infected animals. It can also be transmitted through bowls and shared equipment. But, it can be avoided by rapid vaccinations.
