The memorable run of Andy Murray and Serena Williams at Wimbledon is over after the loss to seeded Bruno Soares and Nicole Melichar in mixed doubles.

The British Murray, 32, and American Williams, 37, illuminated the SW19 with their successful partnership, but failed in a 6-3 4-6 6-2 defeat.

This loss means that the return of the Scotsman to Wimbledon – nearly six months after a serious hip operation – is over.

Now he must decide on the next step as he hopes to be able to play singles again.

On Tuesday, Murray said that singles play at the US Open in September seemed "rather unlikely", while he continues to take his recovery cautiously.

After leaving on Wednesday, the former British number one said: "I think I have accomplished a lot.

"I arrived on the field and considering the lack of matches, I was successful. The most positive thing is that my body felt good."

Williams still has a chance to win money as she faces Czech Barbora Strycova – British number one conqueror Jo Konta – in the semifinal of singles Thursday.

The 23rd Grand Slam champion said she "loved the support" of playing alongside Murray at the All England Club.

"I hope I can still have it," she added.

"I think playing on this stage with Andy, who has been so successful here for so many years, is literally an experience of a lifetime, and I'm so happy to have lived it."

Wall-reborn outside but full of positives for Sir Andy

Three-time Grand Slam winner, Murray said he was happy to be able to play again after a hip resurfacing operation for which no player was returned in singles.

Few people would have thought to see the 2013 and 2016 champions play against Wimbledon so early and, despite the possibility of seeing another title disappear with Williams, he will come back to last month with a lot of positives.

Murray made a winning comeback by taking the Queen's double alongside Spaniard Feliciano Lopez and continued to look keen for this stage of his recovery at the All England Club.

The partnership with Williams, baptized by the couple under the name "Mur-rena", has seduced the crowds of Wimbledon, but they can not recover after losing their first round of the tournament against Soares and Melichar.

Dogged, defender Williams net, ended in a volley of winner on the way to the break at 3-3, but the pair could not convert and was punished in the next match while Soares and Melichar broke for 5-3 and served the first set.

A tight second set tipped Murray and Williams after Soares produced three double faults in what turned out to be the last game.

The Brazilian, who used to badociate with Murray's brother, Jamie, in the men's doubles, made amends by sealing a break in the decision maker's first game with a winner in law placed between his opponents.

That played a key role as the seed started fleeing with the set, taking their first point of the match to reach the quarterfinals when Murray punched a forehand in the net.

However, Murray and Williams continued to smile as they left a crowded court two to a standing ovation.
