Anger While Sainsbury's Place Electronic Cigarettes and Vaporized Liquids on Open Shelves

Sainsbury's is under fire for having stocked addictive vaping products on open shelves near the Health and Beauty aisle.

Soft drinks and e-cigarettes are usually sold behind populated counters in the same way as tobacco products.

A spokesman for the supermarket chain said the move was aimed at finding vaping products with smoking cessation aids such as nicotine patches.

Conservative MP Bob Blackman, chair of the caucus on smoking and health, said, "It's wrong to have them on open shelves."

This change could make e-cigarettes and nicotine-containing vaping liquid more accessible to young people, he added, giving the impression that vaping was safe.

"We do not know enough about the long-term effects of e-cigarette use. It's quite possible that the electronic liquid contains dangerous chemicals, "Blackman said.

Sainsbury's said, "Spray products are for smokers looking for an alternative to cigarettes. A natural home for them is close to anti-smoking products. "
