Some natives employed by AGA for the redeveloped Obuasi mine
AngloGold Ashanti says it will meet local content requirements by providing semi-skilled and unskilled locals with equitable opportunities to hire company staff.
The Obuasi mine has been the subject of maintenance and maintenance work since 2016 and is currently working on the first gold distribution in December.
More than 3,000 workers have already been employed in underground tunnels, production plants and other important components of ongoing construction activities.
Chief of Operations, Brett Thompson, said that the majority of the workforce came from Obuasi and surrounding communities.
"At the present time, because of the many construction activities going on in the processing plant, new people are coming in. We probably have more than 3,000 on the site now and for permanent employees, we continue to recruit people for treatment plants, "he said.
AngloGold Ashanti has signed a five-year underground mining contract with three companies for the Obuasi re-development mine.
The Alliance of Underground Mining, Rocksure International of Ghana and African Underground Mining Services of Australia.
The agreement, valued at $ 375 million, aims to develop skills in mechanized and underground mining in Ghana's local mining and technical sector.
"With the suspension of mining activities, we are going to introduce new activities, and for the moment, we are developing, but we will be establishing shutdown activities by the end of this year and then in the middle of the year. next year, we will be making major infrastructure renovations, "Thompson said.
AngloGold Ashanti said its existing recruitment campaign had definitive local content overseen by the Minerals Commission, a procedure that Mr. Thompson described as good.
"The current recruitment process has very specific requirements for local content, not just about us, but good business for us, but it's also well controlled by the Minerals Commission.
In terms of local employment, the majority we are trying to find [unskilled and semi-skilled] exclusively Obuasi communities. Where we can not find these skills here, we are obviously aiming elsewhere in Ghana for a limited period and this is well controlled by the Minerals Commission. "
Locals, especially youth, have a habit of lining up at AGA offices looking for a job.
Elijah Adansi-Bonah, chief executive of Obuasi, welcomes the turn of events so far.
"I can say shamelessly that people from Obuasi are employed … There are people I can name, these are people from Obuasi.
Locals seeking employment with AGA must first have their forms approved by traditional authorities, badembly members and unit committees.
Mr. Adansi-Bonah hopes that this would track the number of natives employed by AGA.
"They [AGA] have put in place a local employment procedure. You choose a form, you present it to your community, your leader, your queen, the chairman of the committee of your unit, the member of the badembly and all three must subscribe. Then you submit the form to the company so that it knows that you are a native, "he explained.
