Fewer than 30 deputies were present at the beginning of the works Thursday
The Speaker of Parliament, Professor Mike Oquaye, expressed his dissatisfaction with the delay of members in the House, as fewer than 30 of the 275 members were present at the opening of the offices on Thursday, March 21, 2019.
According to Professor Oquaye, delays and absenteeism do not send the public a positive sign of the seriousness of the members in the performance of their duties.
"In a way, we have an appointment with the good people of Ghana, especially young people who come to listen to their parliament," he said, adding, "I will pray that we take this obligation. seriously. If we take our country seriously, we will take this obligation seriously. "
This will not be the first time that Parliament's leadership has raised questions about MPs' absenteeism.
Parliament's first Deputy Speaker, Joe Osei-Owusu, recently urged members of Parliament to be serious about their work and to actively participate in the work of the House.
Odekro, a civil society organization focused on the activities of the legislature, recently reported that 54 deputies exceeded the number of times that a legislator could be absent without authorization at the third sitting of the chamber in 2018.
